The ArchiMate modeling language is designed to be compatible with the TOGAF framework; that is, architects who follow the guidelines and best practices provided by the TOGAF framework can use the ArchiMate language to address many modeling tasks, including creating view frameworks based on the various architectural viewpoints recommended within the TOGAF framework.
In the TOGAF framework, “architecture landscape” refers to the representation of assets used or planned by an enterprise at a specific point in time. The ArchiMate language, when used with appropriate tools, can be employed to create and maintain descriptions of an enterprise architecture environment—the key component of an architecture repository, which is the architecture knowledge base described in the TOGAF standard. The other part of this repository is the reference library, where reference architectures and similar materials are stored. Here, the ArchiMate modeling language can ultimately be used to standardize the description of these reference architectures.
Figure 1 illustrates an approximate mapping of the ArchiMate modeling language to the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM).
